the prototyke lab

excels at dodging the question "what kind of music do you play?" The project started as a collaboration between singer-songwriter Vincy Chan and local instrumentalists for a Freespace Happening performance in March 2017. The members' diverse backgrounds and influences allow them to experiment with a new musical dialect.

Since its inception, the lab has performed at West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), MacPherson Stadium, 1563 at the East and Lost Stars Livehouse. They were featured on WKCD's Freespace Mixtape Vol.1 last year and will be returning to the studio this summer for the second instalment of the Mixtape project.

Catch their next performance here.

Jacky Man - Bass/ Bandleader

Outside of being the Lab's Head of Discipline, Jacky is a sought-after session bassist who has backed some of the hottest Canto pop singers (Pakho Chau, Hins Cheung, Ivana Wong, Janice Vidal) in live concerts and in studios. The 2011 winner of Beijing MIDI Contest's "Best Bassist" also worked on musical theatre productions of Broadway classics (Grease, Aida.)

Nicky Tong - Guitar

You might have seen Nicky on TVB's music programmes, or on the stage with local stars (Alfred Hui, Hins Cheung, Robynn & Kendy, Yoyo Sham.)

Atlas Iu - Trumpet/ Synth

Atlas is a versatile trumpet player whose stellar chops have landed him gigs with orchestras (HK Phil, HK Sinfonietta) and music giants (Lea Salonga, Yoshiki.) He's active as a pop session player (Justin Lo, Jason Chan, Janice Vidal) and a jazz/ indie musician. He swings with R.O.O.T., as well as Japanese fusion band Mike Orange & The Universe Travellers.

Him Hui - Keys

Him likes to hide behind his bangs despite having been interviewed on ViuTV's 「Local Ginger 本地薑」and featured on the cover of local music magazine Re:Spect. He's shared the stage with local favourites: C All Star, Charmaine Fong, JW and (the other) Vincy Chan 泳兒 to name a few.
